Read for a Lifetime

State-wide reading program for High School students
Sponsored by Secretary of State and State Librarian, Jesse White

This program actually began in 1998-1999, but Carthage Public Library first participated in 2004-2005.

Students who read at least 4 of the 25 books from the list between June and April of the current school year will receive a certificate of achievement signed by Secretary of State Jesse White. Students who participate during all 4 years of high school will receive special recognition.

The Library will also reward students with a small prize (such as a food coupon), and addtional prizes for students who read at least 12 of the books and any who read 22-25 of the titles.

For this program, they must read the books. Listening to audio books does not count (unless the student has a vision impairment or learning disability). If they have previously read some of the books on the list, they need to choose 4 titles that they have not read before to read during this school year.

The above rules must be followed to meet the state's minimum requirements of 4 books. For additional prizes awarded by the library for reading 1/2 or all of the titles, audio books are acceptable (but not movies), and it is o.k. if the books were read in a previous year.

For more information and a list of this year's titles visit
the State Library's website

High School Students may also participate in the
Abraham Lincoln reading program.

Reading Programs for other ages include:
Rebecca Caudill -- 4th-8th Grades
Bluestem Award -- 3rd-5th Grades
