New Circulation System and Card Catalog

Carthage Public Library, along with other members of the Resource Sharing Alliance, switched to a different on-line circulation system in December 2007.

The Card Catalog, which will now be called RSACat, is also new. You do not need to log-in to search our catalog. You may use the quick search box above, or click the link below for more advance searching.

If you choose to log-in, you may access your account to view due dates and renew the materials you have checked out, and place holds on materials you would like to borrow.

In order to use these on-line features you will need your library card barcode number and a PIN number. Stop by the Library to receive your new library card & ask for your PIN.

If you use e-mail, your e-mail address can be included in your patron record, and the system will automatically generate courtesy notices to advise you that materials will soon be due and notices of any overdue materials.

There is also a free service called shoutbomb. You sign up via text from your cell phone and then you will receive courtesy and overdue notices via text message. Some items may also be renewed via text.

Eliminate the Digital Divide Grant

Carthage Public Library was one of 41 Illinois public libraries and community college learning resource centers to share in a nearly $1 million "Eliminate the Digital Divide Program Grant" awarded to the Illinois State Library by the Illinois Department of Commerce & Economic Opportunity (DCEO).

In Carthage, the funds will be used to purchase equipment including: a new color copier/scanner/printer, desktop computers to replace older models and to create 2 additional public Internet stations, and laptop computers and an LCD projector to allow the library to provide computer workshops upstairs, using wireless Internet, without interfering with our patrons' use of our computers.

Another important component of the grant is providing workshops and training for the public. The goal is to provide computer skills needed for educational and economic improvement, as well as for personal use. To meet this goal, the library will offer workshops in basic computer literacy skills; resume building and job searching using on-line resources available via Illinois workNet; and using i-Pathways, an on-line site to help adults prepare to take the GED exam (equivalent of a high school diploma) or to further their education. Workshops will begin in Nov. 2011. Each will be offered 4 times throughout the grant period, ending in May 2012.

Fundraising

The library continues to have many financial needs as we pay for the rennovation project. We also hope to raise funds for Phase 2 of our project, remodeling the upstairs.

Our capital giving campaign continues. We have raised over $30,000 toward our $150,000 goal. Donors of $100 or more will be recognized with their name on a plaque. Silver Sponsors (donors of $1000 or more) and Golden Givers (of $5000 or more) will be listed on a special display board being created from one of our old card catalog drawer cabinets. Donations in memory of or honor of individuals are welcomed.

Laminating

The Carthage Public Library has recently purchased a laminator and is now offering laminating service. The cost is $.25 for a half sheet and $.50 for a whole sheet. Further questions? Just call the library at 217-357-3232.

Wireless Internet

The Library now has a wireless internet connection that is provided by Adams NetWorks, Inc.

Outside Book Drop

The Library has a freestanding book return recpetacle outside in front of the library. When the library is closed, please return all of your materials in this book drop, which is located just west of the front door. When the library is open, we now have a slot in the circulation desk for returning your books.

Fishing Poles Available

That's right, you can now borrow a fishing pole from the library, checking it out like other library materials. The rods and reels were provided by the Illinois Department of Natural Resources in an effort to provide all children in our area with access to fishing.

The first time a patron checks out one of the poles, (s)he will also receive a kit containing hooks, a bobber, sinkers, etc. and an instruction booklet.

The loan period for the fishing poles in 3 days, just right for a weekend of fishing. Although the program was initiated with children in mind, the rods are available to patrons of all ages. Remember, although children do not need a fishing license, adults are required to have one if they plan to fish.
