The Volunteer Program at Memorial Hospital/Hancock County Nursing Home has served the hospital since it opened in 1950 and the nursing home since 1969. The volunteers are a loyal and valuable group of people who are committed to serve the hospital and nursing home in many ways.

A Volunteer is:
Anyone who wishes to give of his/her time for the betterment of the society.
Legally, someone who agrees to provide services without expectation of or right to compensation.
Gratuitous employee serves under the control of another and has an interest in the work being performed.
Servant agrees to assist another for the other's benefit.

MISSION OF VOLUNTEER DEPARTMENT - "The Volunteer Service Department at Memorial Hospital/Hancock County Nursing Home has been established to develop and maintain an efficient and humanistic volunteer staff which offers extra care and services to patients and residents, empathy for families, visitors, and also to help the facilities staff."

PURPOSE: The purpose of our volunteer program is to assist the hospital and nursing home in providing the best possible health care to our community. We also serve as a public relations link between the hospital, nursing home, and the people we serve.

AUXILIARY AND ITS TWIGS - The Auxiliary is a group of ladies who meet to serve and plan for fund raisers for the Hospital and Nursing Home. Their principal activity remains to provide assistance (financial and physical) in any way deemed necessary and acceptable by the institution's administration. Three levels of membership exist: active, sustaining, and life. You need not be a member of the Auxiliary to become a volunteer of our facility.

SURGICAL/LOBBY HOSTESS - This program is established to help meet the needs of the surgical patient's families while their loved one is having surgery or being treated.

The Twigs are community-based groups who are part of the Auxiliary and pay dues. Some of the things they do include:
Purchasing of equipment
Sewing and mending
Stuffed animals for young surgical patients
Caps and bibs for infants
Prenatal classes
Tray favors and decorations
Ice water, juice, and mail delivery
Clergy notification
Operation of Gift Shop
Activities, crafts, and games for the Nursing Home
Musical entertainment
Christmas gifts for patients and residents
Christmas tea for staff
Birthday cakes for nursing home residents
Health Fair
Rummage sale and bake sale
Bakeless sale
Play bingo
Read to residents
Nurses scholarship fund; health profession
Shopping Cart
Retired Teachers Program
Volunteers with Special Talent
Medical Library
Many other duties
