Editors: Elder J. R. Respess, (born October 2, 1831, died February 4, 1895) (editor from 1879-1895) founder of the paper in about 1878; Elder William M. Mitchell, (born January 10, 1819, died February 26, 1901) joint editor until his death; Elder J. E. W. Henderson (born January 23, 1839) joint editor until his death; Elder Sylvester Hassell (born July 28, 1842, died August 18, 1928), became associate editor in February 1892. Elder Hassell purchased the paper in 1896 from the family of Elder J. R. Respess. During the time Elder Hassell served as editor, associate editors included Elders James H. Oliphant, Lee Hanks, and G. W. Stewart. In February 1920 Elder Hassell sold the paper to Elder Z. C. Hull, of Atlanta, Georgia, who published it under the same name for about three years, and then sold it to Elder R. H. Pittman, in April 1923. Elder Pittman merged it with his paper, which was already called "Advocate & Messenger" as a result of the merging of Zion's Advocate and Messenger of Truth.

Founded by Elder W. H. Harrell and M. L. Sammons in July 1891, but suspended after a few months. Elder J. G. Webb revived it in 1892. Later editors included Elder T. L. Webb, Sr., Elder J. C. Morgan, Elder W. T. Carter, Mrs. Pearl Morgan, Elder
Troy Corley, and Elder Tom Hart. There were numerous other associate editors and staff writers through the span of 90 years of its existence. We have a microfilm which was purchased from the Historical Commission, SBC, Nashville, Tennessee, which
includes the issues shown below which are dated previous to 1900. We also have on microfilm the period from 1937-1971, which is available from the American Baptist Historical Society, Samuel Colgate Historical Library, 1106 South Goodman Street,
Rochester, NY 14620-2532. Our holdings for 1971-82 have been microfilmed.

The title page of one of our two copies is missing, but the two page preface is signed by J. M. P. (John Mason Peck), November 1843, Rockspring, Illinois, and states that about 100,000 copies had been put in circulation by that date. The copy which contains the title page shows that it was printed by John P. Morton & Co., and copyrighted by Morton and Griswold in the District Court of Kentucky.

PAMPHLETS:

WRITINGS PUBLISHED BY ELDER W. S. CRAIG (1867-1961):

1. SHORT ARTICLES ON PRIMITIVE BAPTIST FAITH AND PRACTICE, mainly in reference to Mt. Zion Church, Cozad, Nebraska. (1979 hardbound book reprint). 114 pp.

2. THE PHARISEE AND THE PUBLICAN. 1922. 18 pp. A booklet designed to set forth the difference between natural and spiritual religion, and to comfort mourning souls.

3. THE SCARLET THREAD. 1922. 27 pp. Wherein the typical significance of the thread which saved Joshua's two spies and Rahab's house from destruction, is illustrated.

4. THE PRIESTHOOD OF JESUS CHRIST. 1923. 27 pp. This very important office of our blessed Saviour defined and explained according to the Bible.

5. THE SOVEREIGN DOMINION OF GOD. 1923. 33 pp. Some notes and observations intended to illustrate and explain this very important subject.

6. THE ELDER SHALL SERVE THE YOUNGER. 1924. 31 pp. Gen. 25:23 and Rom. 9:12 defined and illustrated, together with some material points connected therewith.

7. THE BRAZEN SERPENT. 1924. 31 pp. 60 pp. This very interesting figure of Jesus Christ, while on the Cross, defined and illustrated.

8. THE ATONEMENT. 1925. Part I. Pages 1-56. Part II. Pages 57-104. A treatise on the atonement of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. Preface, definitions, necessity of, design, extent, and results of the atonement.

9. BIBLE PROPHECY. 1925. 26 pp. Being a brief survey of this very important and highly interesting subject.

10. INFANT SALVATION. 1925. 28 pp. The doctrine of their actual salvation from sin, scripturally supported and defended.

11. ADAM. 1925. 49 pp. Some observations and notes on his disobedience and the sad results of it. The object of this booklet is to plainly set forth, from a Bible standpoint, the condemned, sinful, and morally-ruined condition of man according to nature, or as he is born into this world as a descendant of Adam after his Fall, and thereby show the absolute necessity of our merciful Lord's redeeming grace.

12. CHRISTIAN HUMILITY. 1925. Some comments and many extracts on this gracious ornament of Christian character.

13. THE SEED OF THE WOMAN SHALL BRUISE THE SERPENT'S HEAD. 1925. 36 pp. Comments and extracts on this very remarkable declaration of the Lord.

14. ETERNAL LIFE. 1925. 40 pp. This wonderful life proven to be the exclusive product of divine power and grace.

15. THE GLORIOUS TRIUMPHS OF GRACE. Third edition, 1924. 88 pp. Being mainly an abridgement of Abraham Booth's "Reign of Grace". Abraham Booth was an English Baptist minister of rare abilities. But for this unbelieving age his writings are far too sound in doctrine to be sufficiently popular for republication. If his works were not in print, there would be no good reason why I should write these pages, and I surely would not do so.

16. GOOD WORKS. 1924. 50 pp. Notes and comments on their importance and proper place.

17. THE COVENANT OF GRACE. 1925. 56 pp. Comments and extracts on this divine arrangement for the redemption of the chosen subjects of salvation, or the divine arrangement for the salvation of sinners.

18. THE RICH MAN AND LAZARUS; TOGETHER WITH SOME NOTES ON THE PARABLES. 1925. 55 pp. To which is appended some notes on the parables.

19. JUSTIFICATION (BEFORE GOD). 1925. 55 pp. The subject of justification is of such very great importance that I feel I should write more upon it than I have in the short chapter on this subject in my "Triumphs of Grace," and in doing so I have used considerable material from that chapter.

20. THE FIVE POINTS. 1925. 60 pp. These five points form the links of one harmonious chain, which if correctly understood, will be seen to be quite consistently related to each other, viz., Total depravity, Unconditional election, Special redemption, Effectual calling, and Certain perseverance.

21. BRIEF NOTES ON MANY TEXTS SUPPOSED TO FAVOR CONDITIONALISM. 1924. 56 pp.

22. MISCELLANEOUS ARTICLES. 1925. 56 pp. The Binding, Sufferings, and Resurrection of Jesus Christ. Also, unbelief and belief, and The Gospel.

23. PREDESTINATION AND FATALISM. 1925. 54 pp. The distinction between these terms illustrated and defined.

24. SOME OLD CONFESSIONS OF FAITH. 1925. 109 pp. With many notes and extracts. Includes the London of 1689, with the Fulton Notes; Four Waldensian Confessions; Horsly-Down; Kehukee and Ketocton Associations. To which is appended the Black Rock Address.

25. PRIMITIVE BAPTIST HISTORY. Number One, Pages 1-100. Number Two, Pages 101-200. Number Three, 201-304. Number Four, 305-397. This is mainly a collection of historical notes and condensed statements, from a wide range of authors, of what I believe to be the most reliable historical accounts of the Baptists. Also have included much other ecclesiastical matter of importance.

26. ADDITIONAL NOTES TO PRIMITIVE BAPTIST HISTORY. 1926. 104 pp. To be read in connection with the second edition of the History.

27. SOME NOTES AND SUGGESTIONS ON DISCIPLINE AND ORDER, RULES OF DECORUM, AND MISCELLANEOUS SUBJECTS. 1926. 92 pp.
