CHURCHES:
FALLS OF TAR RIVER (1757)
Fall of Tar River Church was organized on Swift Creek, by Elders C. Daniel and John Moore, in the year 1757. Elder John Moore was the pastor for a number of years, until he removed from the neighborhood in 1780. After this, Elder Emmanuel Skinner, a member of the church, supplied the place of a pastor but was not called to that office. He moved to Tennessee in 1797. In 1795 Elder Nathan Gilbert joined the church from Scuppernong church, and was called as pastor in 1802. In 1803 the church was meeting in a commodious meeting house which stood on the north of Tar River, a small distance from the Falls. A brick structure was later built, located in Rocky Mount.
